The 4 major subjects combination for a student who wants to study a mass communication course are:
- Mathematics
- English Language
- Literature in English
- Government/Economics/Commerce.
This combination might be okay when you want to write your JAMB examination. But more of these are required to write the WAEC examination because you will need a maximum of 9 or a minimum of 8 to be able to seat for the upcoming WAEC examination.
What are the subjects a student who wants to study a mass communication course needs to know? What are the subjects that are compulsory to study mass communication? What subjects are not compulsory? How can you choose the best subject that won't affect him or her later in the day?
If you are still in the class (SSS1 -3) in secondary school, I will advise you to take note of the subjects that I am going to list in this article. Taking note of these subjects will help you to focus more on the ones that are more important to you rather than wasting time studying the ones that will help.
But If you are already preparing for the WAEC and the JAMB examination, and your main focus is to study mass communication at any of the universities, polytechnics, or colleges in Nigeria, you must know the compulsory subject that is required from you for you to be admitted. Because nowadays most the university only pick students who comply with their subject requirements.
WAEC subject combination
- Mathematics.
- English Language.
- Literature in English.
- Government.
- History.
- CRS.
- Civic Education
- Geography
- Economics
As you can see from my list above, the subjects in bold letters are very important for you to pass. Although Literature in English, English Language and either Economics or Government are compulsory, you will also need to try as much as possible to have some passes in any of the subjects in bold letters. Nobody is praying for you to fail any subjects you enroll for, but in case it happens you will have other ones to fill up the space without seating for another WAEC examination.
Note: The above subject combination is suggested by me. You can also form your own. But make sure you include those compulsory subjects.
Another reason why you need to focus on this combination is that it can be used for another course that is partially related to mass communication. For example, a student might change his/her mind if he/she doesn't want to study mass communication or because he fails a particular subject that is required.

JAMB subject combination
- Mathematics
- English Language
- Literature in English
- Government/Economics/Commerce.
As it stands here, mathematics is not a compulsory subject if you want to write your JAMB examination. In that case, it can be removed. Literature and the English Language are required. As you can see from the last option, you can choose any of the 2 of them to be added to make it four. when choosing, I will recommend you pick Government and Economics.
